Restoration of environmental health

Restoration of environmental health aims at;

*allowing the environment to refresh itself

*Making mankind to be mindful of other living things and

*enhancing harmony in the ecosystem.

The following are the ways of enhancing environmental restoration;

1.Enhance a healthy soil food Web-soil organic matter is the storehouse for the energy and nutrients used by plants and other organisms.

Bacteria, fungi and other soil dwellers transform and release nutrients from organic matter.

These microshredders, immature oribatid mites skeletonize plant leaves. This starts the nutrient cycling of carbon, nitrogen and other elements.

Practices that build soil organic matter include reduced tillage and additions of organic material.

2.Healthy waste disposal management-human activities create different types of wastes every single minute, hour and day.

We produce both organic wastes eg food remains and inorganic wastes like syringes from hospitals among others.

When all these wastes are not properly disposed, it increases environmental pollution and it’s effects.

Every kind of waste needs to be disposed in a manner that does not cause environmental pollution.

3.Afforestation-this is the planting of trees in an area that did not initially have them.

Afforestation has so many advantages but key among them are;increasing oxygen levels in the atmosphere, increasing precipitation and improving biotic and abiotic components.

4.Planting cover crops-besides food from cover crops, they help to reduce soil erosion.

Soil erosion reduces soil fertility and productivity.

5.Encourage organic/sustainable farming-in simplest terms, sustainable agriculture is the production of food, fiber,or other plant or animal products using farming techniques that protect the environment, public health, human communities and animal welfare.

6.Encourage investment in green energy-production and transportation of oil pollutes the environment.

Governments and individuals should be encouraged to explore options in green energy eg solar energy.

7.Encourage production of green products-the world is filled with so many products most of which are harmful to the environment.

Companies should be encouraged to produce earth-friendly products eg biodegradable detergents, biodegradable fertilizers among others.

8.Encourage water harvesting and storage-there are times when rainfall is in excess. Such times, water should be harvested by use of dams or tanks and used at later dates when there is shortage.

9.Use compost and animal manure-natural manure is better than inorganic fertilizers.

Inorganic fertilizers pollute soils and kill soil organisms responsible for maintaining soil health and fertility.

SUPER GRO is a biodegradable fertilizer proven to maximize farm productivity by up to 167%.We also recommend the use of biodegradable fertilizers and other earth friendly products.

Benefits of a healthy environment

1.Healthy food web-soil food web consists of organisms responsible for maintaining soil health and fertility.

Harsh chemicals used for washing and general cleaning threaten the lives of these organisms and soil health in general.

2.Healthy atmosphere-the atmosphere is responsible for regulating the air we breath, air responsible for manufacture of food by plants and other gases.

The atmosphere is also responsible for giving us rainfall.

Destruction of the ozone layer by air pollution has serious effects like global warming which is the biggest crisis of our time.

3.Quality food production-soil health has a direct effect on the quality of food produced.A healthy soil produces healthy food and vice versa.

Contamination of water bodies destroys marine life.We have also had cases of fish found to be contaminated with mercury. We have cases in Kenya of some farmers growing vegetables using sewage water.

Food contamination has very serious health effects. The rising food related diseases eg cancer are associated with food pollution.

4.Abundant food production-about 3 decades ago, farm productivity was very high.Farm produced a lot of food.

Every homestead had granaries to store farm produce. Some families had enough food to last them till the next harvest.

A healthy environment enhances food security.

5.Healthy and productive lives-good nutrition is the basis for optimal health. A healthy environment produces healthy food.

A hungry man is an angry man. There is a saying that people who feel good about themselves produce good results. Anger isn’t a good feeling and therefore it can’t produce good results.

Productivity is both quality and quantity. A healthy environment enhances both quality and quantity productivity.

6.Low cost of living-food security ensures that all people at all times have a steady access to sufficient amounts of healthy and nutritious food to sustain healthy and productive lives.

One of the main reasons for hikes in food prices is food scarcity.

Since food is a basic human need, any increase in food prices raises the cost of living.

Food security therefore guarantees a low cost of living.

7.Undisrupted seasons-environmental pollution causes a change in weather patterns every year.

These changes shorten some seasons and prolong others.

Uneven weather patterns have serious implications on food production, population growth and stability.

8.Social stability-when everything in the environment is balanced, stability is achieved.

When there are unfavorable weather patterns, drought, food scarcity and deaths of animals and mankind due to starvation becomes common.

Cases of intercommunity conflicts over limited resources like water and grazing fields are reported in Kenya every year.

9.Quality lives-a healthy environment enhances both health and wealth.

Resources in a healthy environment are wealth.

10.Source of inspiration and knowledge-a healthy environment inspires creativity.

By observing nature, we learn a lot of things. Nature has a perfect order that ensures that things happen in a particular way consistently without causing confusion.

A scientist discovered the law of gravity by observing a falling mango.

Effects of environmental pollution

Air pollution

1.Respiratory diseases-Evidence of increasing air pollution is seen in lung cancer, asthma, allergies and various breathing problems along with severe and irreparable damage to flora and fauna.

2.Bird migration-Even the most natural phenomenon of migratory birds has been hampered with severe air pollution preventing them from reaching their seasonal metropolitan destinations of centuries.

3.Global warming-Chlorofluocarbons(CFC) released from refrigerators, air conditioners, deodorants and insect repellents cause severe damage to the earth’s environment. This gas has slowly damaged the atmosphere and depleted the ozone layer leading to global warming.

Water pollution

1.Death of marine life-contanination of water bodies with harmful chemicals kills fish and other water inhabitants.

2.Waterborne diseases-contaminated water is not fit for human use as drinking water.Cholera, typhoid and dysentery spread very fast through water.

3.Fish contamination-polluting water bodies with chemicals and metals is very harmful. Fish contaminated with mercury causes serious health problems.

Noise pollution

Examples of noise pollution are aircraft noise, noise of cars, buses, trucks, vehicle horns, loudspeakers, and industry noise.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has documented seven categories of adverse health and social effects of noise pollution, whether occupational, social or environmental:

1.hearing impairment

2.interference with spoken communication

3.cardiovascular disturbances

4.mental health problems

5.impaired cognition

6.negative social behaviour eg bad mood.

7.sleep disorders.

Soil pollution

Soil pollution may result from acid rain, polluted water, fertilizers etc.

Contaminated soils produce bad crops unfit for human consumption.

Other effects of pollution

Global warming as a result of the destruction of the ozone layer affects climate. Climate change has serious effects.

1.Drought-lack of rain for a long time kills plants, crops and vegetation. Severe drought causes death of animals and human beings.

2.Wild fires-excessive heat due to high temperatures sometimes causes wild fires.

3.Famine/food scarcity-Poor rainfall affects food production.

Food scarcity leads to poor food choices, undernutrition and malnutrition.Poor nutrition may lead to a variety of food related diseases.

Food scarcity causes a hike in food prices which in turn increases the cost of living.

4.Poverty-when families fail to afford basic commodities consistently, their capacity to live productive lives is hampered.

5.Social instability-Uneven distribution of basic commodities eg food and water is a recipe for wars between communities.

In Kenya, some pastoral communities fight, kill and displace others due to competition over limited resources like water and animal grazing fields.

6.Corruption-One man’s meat is another man’s poison. We have opportunists everywhere. The highest form of corruption is done by governments.

Instead of solving perennial problems related to food scarcity for instance, some governments allocate billions of shillings every year that end up in the pockets of a few.

Environmental health

What is environmental health?

The World Health Organization (WHO) defines Envionmental health as the science and practice of prevening human injury and illness and promoting wellbeing by;

1.identifying and evaluating environmental sources and hazardous agents and

2.limiting exposure to hazardous physical, chemical and biological agents in air, water, soil, food and other environmental media or settings that may adversely affect human health.

What is the focus of environmental restoration?

Environmental restoration aims at creating awareness on,initiating and implementing activities that result in;

1.stopping soil pollution,

2.stopping water pollution,

3.stopping air pollution,

4.stopping noise pollution,

5.stopping food pollution,

6.stopping deforestation and other harmful environmental activities.

To achieve the above, this section is subdivided into 3;Restoration of environmental health, effects of environmental pollution and benefits of a healthy environment.
